Day 5 – Drawn

Ephesians 2:4-6 (TLB)
4 But God is so rich in mercy; he loved us so much
5 that even though we were spiritually dead and doomed by our sins, he gave us back our lives again when he raised Christ from the dead—only by his undeserved favor have we ever been saved —
6 and lifted us up from the grave into glory along with Christ, where we sit with him in the heavenly realms—all because of what Christ Jesus did.

There is a powerful parable in Luke 10 about the man who was cared for by the Good Samaritan. While the Samaritan’s compassion rightly receives much of the focus, the wounded traveler also offers a meaningful perspective. He was on his way to Jerusalem, following his own plans and schedule, when he was suddenly attacked by thieves. Beaten and robbed, he was left nearly dead, with nothing remaining of what he had carried.

Then, unexpectedly, someone from a people considered unacceptable came upon him in his desperate condition. Though the man had nothing to offer and no way to benefit his rescuer, the Samaritan not only cared for him on the roadside, but carried him to an inn and paid for his full recovery. For the wounded traveler, it was not only healing and provision that mattered, but the mercy shown to him — love extended without regard to worth, merit, or prior relationship.

In the same way, wherever we are on the road of life, regardless of how our own plans have unfolded, there is One who has come to us before we ever sought Him. Before we could even recognize who He was, He provided complete healing for our wounds and provision far beyond what we had lost. Without any deserving on our part — and even while we were opposed to Him — He offered not only rescue, but relationship.

More than restoring us, He gave us a place beside Him. According to Ephesians 2, we are now seated with Christ in heavenly places, far above the powers of this world, able to live in confidence and peace, cared for eternally in the presence of the Almighty. He accomplished this before we ever turned toward Him.

Yet for what He has already provided to be received and experienced, a choice is required — a turning from what we were walking toward and a turning to Him. And when the revelation of this seat beside Him becomes clear, we gladly abandon every lesser path and allow Him to carry us fully into the life He has already prepared.
