Ephesians 2:4-6 (NLT)
4 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much,
5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)
6 For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.
In November, my sons and I crawled on a plane and flew to Denver. We stayed in a hotel on a Saturday night and went to a Broncos football game the next day. I grew up in Colorado, went to the University of Denver, and have been a fan of the Broncos since listening to their games on the radio as a child with my Dad. When we arrived at Empower Field to attend the game, though, our traveling to Denver and my having been a fan forever had nothing to do with getting in actually to see the game. There was only one thing that gave each of us access – a ticket we had special access to long before a single plan was laid. Our tickets, and our tickets alone, gave us access to seats four rows up from the field and in the corner of the end-zone. Long before we arrived there, we were already seated. Now, having access and a seat were not enough on their own, though. It took us going there, showing the tickets, and advancing to warm our seats.
A seat has already been purchased with the blood of Jesus for a place right by His side in the heavens. Though we may have spent our whole life in church, knowing the ways and sounds of religion, nothing we have done has given us access to a place far above the principalities and powers of this world. Faithful attendance and service don’t qualify for that seat. There is one thing, and one thing alone, that grants access and seating – having a blood-bought personal ticket. Just having and knowing about our ticket, however, isn’t enough on its own either. Without an advance to what Jesus has provided, there will be no effect or blessing from the seat awaiting us. There is a place of refuge far above the raging of life’s storms, where we have authority over all the darkness of this world. All it takes is ownership of our tickets through unity with Christ and advancing to and warming our seats at His side. It’s there His purpose will be fulfilled and His redemption price rewarded. We already have the seats- just need to go enjoy the view.
"I already have a seat in heavenly places through my union with Christ where I boldly go for safety, provision, and a position of authority over the realm of darkness.”
