Psalms 91:1-2 (NKJV)
1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust."Psalms 27:3-4 (NKJV)
3 Though an army may encamp against me, My heart shall not fear; Though war may rise against me, In this I will be confident.
4 One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple.
What a relief it is to find a place of refuge from the elements, where storms and enemies cannot wreak their devastation. There is an immediate experience of peace in that place as the stress of anxiety and worry for what seems imminent in their advances is silenced and put to rest. Gratitude for this escape and its warmth overwhelm as hope comes alive to replace fear and trepidation with confident boldness for the future.
As wonderful as this place can be, though, remaining there within its protection is essential for gaining the full effect of its potential. That doesn’t even seem like a logical or probable decision to make, an yet, many folks who have discovered a refuge from life’s storms in the presence of the Lord find themselves wandering off back into the elements that had so wrongly treated them. Bondage, oppression, physical attacks, and financial devastation lose their hold on the soul when the Truth of the Word is found in a place of safety at the Master’s side. The weights and overwhelming worries are set aside for a peace that passes the understanding of all of them. In Him has been found a blessed escape where the soul can at last know rest and restoration.
Somehow, though, once the pressure is off for a bit, there is temptation to go from the protected security under His wings and venture back into the tempest, unprotected. The memory of their previous condition isn’t enough of a warning to remain there in safety. There are just cravings and experiences outside His space that call for abandonment of His side. The unrealized danger, however, is that once the discovered refuge is disregarded and left behind, the choice to return may be compromised. The misunderstood reality is that the relief of first arriving isn’t the greatest need for the refuge. To remain there as a continual abode allows for established strength, wisdom, and resources to effectively venture out, but not to just escape back to desires there, but to impact with the glory encountered there.
God, in this precious time of refuge discovery in His presence is instilling this passion for what can only be found in Him that is disallowing any notions of going back out on our own, As remaining there with Him is ensconced in the removal of flesh voices, there is sense of residence established that will avert all notions of departing from the only place where growth and fulfillment are truly possible. He is establishing us in a righteousness that that is far from any fear or the effects of terror and loss and never to be abandoned for a return to the elements alone.
