Philippians 3:8-9 (TLB)
8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have put aside all else, counting it worth less than nothing, in order that I can have Christ,
9 and become one with him, no longer counting on being saved by being good enough or by obeying God’s laws, but by trusting Christ to save me; for God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith—counting on Christ alone.Colossians 3:17 (TLB)
17 And whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of the Lord Jesus, and come with him into the presence of God the Father to give him your thanks.Colossians 3:1-3 (NKJV)
1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.
2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
There was a man who had accumulated great wealth through hard work and wise choices throughout his life. After his estate was well established, he and his wife were blessed with two sons, born a few years apart. The father rejoiced in this gift and was devoted to ensuring his boys would never lack opportunity or provision. Though he treasured every moment with them, he never forced his presence on them—he simply made himself continually available. All he desired was whatever would lead them to fulfillment and lasting success.
While they were young, the boys enjoyed many things with their father: camping, fishing, and working on projects together. But as they grew older, the older son began to pursue the opportunities and resources available to him in order to spend more time with friends and enjoy the many attractions life offered. Gradually, being at home and spending time with his father became less frequent.
There was something different about the younger son. From his earliest days, he learned to value not only the benefits of his father’s love, but the treasure of being with him—watching how he worked, learning how he thought, and drawing from his wisdom. Over time, this desire to remain close to his father grew stronger than any attraction pulling his brother away.
Though the father never favored one son over the other, the results of their choices became evident—not only in what they possessed, but especially in their character and quality of life. By seeking entertainment and fulfillment elsewhere, the older son missed formative years that could have established him in lasting wisdom, influence, and stability. His independence slowly shaped habits and decisions that became less fruitful, both in resources and in relationships.
He never lost everything, but he missed something far greater. He missed the depth of inheritance his brother gained by choosing, again and again, what honored their father. And it became clear that it was not wealth that made the difference between them, but the daily choice of relationship over reward, presence over provision, and the father himself over all he could give.
All who enter the family of God are given sonship and the same access to the blessings of the Father. The provision and opportunities found in His inheritance are great, yet there is something far greater that remains the personal choice of each child—the influence of His presence over every moment of life.
The child who chooses His hand may experience pleasure in the overflow of His goodness. But the child who chooses Him over all other enticements gains the very nature of the Father. And when His nature is formed within us, provision becomes the natural outcome of walking in His thoughts and ways.
Where the treasure of His presence directs every decision, life becomes rich not only in earthly blessing, but also secure for eternity—long after all other things have passed away.
