Reproach Removal

Reproach Removal

1 Samuel 17:26
And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

Where there is a giant that stands in defiance of the Word of God, there is an oppressive spirit of shame and discouragement that engenders a sense of hopelessness and despair. As long as he is allowed to remain, bellowing and taunting, there can be no forward movement towards the promises of God. His size and strength may be formidable and there may be a long list of reasons for him to dismay and distress, but the only true reason for his continued existence is a misperception of his invalidity as a foe.

The doctor’s report may outline the worst prognosis of a destructive disease. The bank account may be shouting out an inability to cover rising expenses. Depression and discouragement may drain the mind’s ability to focus and process. Rejection and failure may disrupt hope for desired relationships. With each one of these and other potential giants there is a glaring affront to the promise of God that, if allowed to remain, will directly debilitate any confidence towards God and hope for the future in Him. As large and imposing as he may be, the only true ability of the giant lies in the concealment of his failed qualifications as a valid foe. He may possess otherwise devastating destructive abilities, but before someone who has received redemption by the blood of Jesus from any curse he can wield, he is actually powerless and utterly impotent.

For the one who will put to death the giant in the power of the Spirit, there is complete removal of not just the giant himself, but the shame, discouragement and doubt towards God that may have been imposing for the longest time. There is a head removal of any opposition to a victorious identity in Christ for the one who will simply depart from the paralized sidelines of fear and trepidation and move towards direct confrontation of that giant with a clear vision of his vulnerability and a proclaimed declaration of His destruction. As faith and boldness are no longer impressed with his defiance, fear will be transformed into wonderment that he ever even existed.
