1 Corinthians 3:18-20 (NIV) 18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”; 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”
For someone to really be “woke”, “happening”, and obviously elevated in progressive and superior “wisdom”, there must be submission to a way of thinking given to us by this present age. Great pressure has come upon all those who might oppose this lofty and self-exalted way of thinking as talking heads in social and cable media present a steady stream of persuasion that to think otherwise is to obviously be a “fool”. Not content with just holding to an alternative option, as their wisdom has come from their own more sensitive and understanding minds, anyone who might think otherwise must be given a denigrated an unacceptable label. For their better way to be legitimate, any resistance must not be tolerated, but stamped as “foolish” and archaic. It must also be abolished.
What’s interesting about this passage from 1 Corinthians is that this very same notion was going on over 2000 years ago, “wisenheimers” thinking themselves to be above the thoughts of God. Even then belief in their own self-generated thoughts was so much above the constrictive restraints of God’s wisdom that only “fools” would even consider opposing them. Any standard from God that might require an adjusted lifestyle was obviously mindless since it didn’t come from theirs. What is taking place in the present age for us today is really nothing new or progressive at all. It’s just the continuation of an archaic and truly foolish notion that truth can evolve and be improved upon by personal observation.
There is a wisdom that has stood unchanging through all of history. It has never required analysis, surveys and polling for its validation of legitimacy. Those who have ever acquired and lived by this wisdom have first elevated its Source far above themselves to the point of fearing any consideration that would oppose His. There has also been a willingness to take on any “fool” labeling from the smaller thinkers without being swayed by their ineffective and futile pontifications. For them there is eternal hope in aligning to the way of life His wisdom describes, no matter how much personal adjustment it requires. The transformation to His abundance of life is found to be so much more desirable and effective than simple conformation to just another human-born concept of “progressive” thought. From Noah to Moses to Paul and countless since, becoming foolish to the “woke” crowd has never kept them from experiencing the rewards and effectiveness of the only true wisdom from God.
